So uh Y: the Last Man movie has been greenlit?? BKV is already writing the screenplay??? THESE PROSPECTS MAKE ME SIMULTANEOUSLY BESIDE MYSELF WITH EXCITEMENT AND ALSO DEATHLY AFRAID. But that’s what dream casts are for right? To keep the dream alive when official casting threatens to crush our souls and destroy all faith in the world. (i.e. do I even need to say it (Last Airbender; here’s the ultimate ATLA dream cast to soothe all the broken hearts out there))
Yorick Brown
Dork, wiseass, escapologist, nerd/pop culture extraordinaire, foolhardy and sometimes idiotically righteous good guy with a huge heart (and a busload of issues). That doesn’t even begin to cover the person he later becomes through the span of the whole story. I’ve seen Ryan Reynolds and Shia LaBeouf tossed about the internet a lot. They’re the “most obvious” Hollywood candidates for the right reasons - RR for one looks uncannily fit for Yorick’s part, esp. with his repertoire for playing wiseasses, and SL does a good young-dork-suddenly-becomes-world-savior-to-whom-all-kinds-of-bad-shit-starts-happening - but I don’t think they have the emotional depth for the part. RR maaaaybe but not SL. Zachary Levi and Bryan Greenberg for the same reasons, but again, lack of emotional depth and breadth. A younger, spunkier Ed Norton would’ve been AMAZING like 10 years ago, but my heart is dead set on Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who’s virtually a young Ed Norton anyway). Do I even need to talk about this? This guy’s done a lot of heavy lifting and has put himself in such gritty places (Mysterious Skin, Brick) and shown such versatility and acting range, I really can entrust this role to no one else.
Though goddamn does Ryan Reynolds look scarily like Yorick @_@ and he makes good doofy faces

Agent 355
Badass to the nth degree, zero-tolerance on bullshit, rock solid friend and traveling companion. After trawling past all the Halle Berry/Alicia Keys/BEYONCE??? and other clearly unintelligent insensible casting choices floating on the internet, I found some really good ones like Naomie Harris and Rutina Wesley. I won’t deny my own first thought was Gina Torres. If only she were a bit younger :[ There’s also Gugu Mbatha-Raw who’s currently kicking loads of ass in Undercovers. I haven’t seen any of these ladies act enough to really judge on skill, but looks-wise I’m leaning towards Naomie and Tracie Thoms. Gugu to play up the sexiness/femininity cuz it’s so easy to forget that underneath her hard military exterior 355 is a beautiful woman.

Dr. Allison Mann
Sardonic, smart, sarcastic, sassy, bitchy, and the mouthiest, angriest doctor/biologist to ever exist. We need not only an Asian girl, we need one with serious attitude. And Asian girls in movies/TV are few and far between to begin with (no, I am absolutely not considering any Lius or Zhangs) so this list is extremely short: Grace Park and Maggie Q are the obvious choices for their fairly well-known TV careers, though MQ I feel is a bit too uh… blue steel?? I guess we’ll see if she expands her acting range in Nikita. GP’s pretty spot on though, so long as she can learn to speak Japanese and Chinese decently. My personal hands-down choice though is Michelle Krusiec who played a lesbian and spoke Mandarin in Saving Face.

Beth DeVille
Love of Yorick’s life. Strong, independent, sophisticated with a sometimes nerdy/dorky streak. I’ve seen Kristen Bell and Amanda Seyfried come up but I personally think those are way off. Beth has to be a kind of subdued bombshell with a maturity, independence and a certain finesse to her character. Beth also deserves a bigger, more established name to fill her shoes. To me it can be no one other than Sienna Miller.

Other Beth
A girl Yorick goes astray with briefly while traversing across the globe running from people who want him dead/in search for his girlfriend. Also blond, pretty, spirited and smart, but had to do her fair share of fighting off the crazy man-haters. I see Kristen Bell as a more likely candidate here, but even then she feels too vanilla. Blake Lively on the other hand has proven she can carry a serious, gritty part in The Town. She was the first and only candidate to come to mind for Beth’s part.

Hero
Yorick’s rebellious, headstrong, hotheaded big sister has just about the same number of issues as he does. One of the less fortunate survivors of the apocalypse, the aftermath unhinged her a bit but she gets her head screwed on right eventually. I had a lot of trouble with this one because I like Hero so much. I even thought of Anna Torv and Ali Larter; I really wanted the kind of mature, passionate, tough girl/fighting woman feeling I get from them, though they may not look entirely right for Hero. And then I found a list on The Film Junkie’s Pop Culture Blog which pretty much made me stand up shouting and clutching my head cuz I’d forgotten the obviousest of the obvious: Jennifer Carpenter. I don’t think I need to explain any more. If you’d seen Dexter you know nobody is more fit to play Hero than fucking Deb.

Alter
Extremist war-mongering and severely disturbed Israeli lieutenant-general who wants to seize the last man to make Israel great again. I am shocked and disappointed no one has mentioned Sarah Shahi. Also extremely bewildered that apparently Natalie Portman is a popular choice for Alter. Hat tip to TFJPCB again for an excellent choice: Ayelet Zurer.

Sadie
Alter’s loyal but slightly more humanistic right hand woman. This role I don’t mind Natalie Portman playing, though I still stand firmly by Sarah Shahi. (My biases are strong.)

Victoria
Crazy redheaded HBIC of the Daughters of the Amazon who are extreme man-haters who slice off their own boob and go around destroying the legacies of man. Hat tip to a forum suggestion: Alice Krige. Beautiful, redheaded, has a British accent! And played the Borg Queen. Perfect for the part.

Rose
Aussie navy cadet, Allison’s eventual love interest. I was at a complete loss, and then I got this from the same forum: Rose Byrne. To quote the forum post, “she’s called Rose and she’s a real Aussie.” Also: super cute.

Natalya
Russian agent and sharpshooter with a sense of humor. To be shamefully honest I hadn’t thought of her AT ALL until I saw someone else’s list… uhh I’ll go with the no-brainer here: Milla Jovovich.

Representative Brown
Congresswoman, mother of Yorick and Hero. Susan Sarandon. No question. (C’mon Rep. Brown is sometimes even illustrated like Sue S. YOU CANNOT DENY IT)

Besides the 2 sources I referenced from, here’s another list with a few pretty good choices (i.e. the 2nd half of the list; what is it with people picking Kristen Bell as Beth??? And Alicia Keys as 355 ARE YOU SERIOUS). In the meantime someone else has already called like half my cast LOL
PHEW LONG POST IS LONG
THAT ONE OF VOLDIE’S FACE IS SO FUCKING CREEPY, OH MY TIMELORD I LOVE THEM.
/HYPERVENTILATING
So I just finished Y the Last Man and am going to be emotionally devastated for 2 weeks (and unable to flip through any volumes before the last one without bursting into tears). But I expect not long after that I’ll be hankering for something equally post-apocalyptic/human-condition-examining/heavy/brilliant/emotionally devastating to wreck myself with. The Umbrella Academy are on hold at the library but won’t be available for a while. Am working on V for Vendetta now but I’ll finish that in a week.
What else should I read? I need something Y-like to get over Y with. (Yes I know that’s a little backwards BUT IT WORKS FOR ME) HELP ME PLEASE ASSIST
